5 of 5 people found the following review helpful Easy triple monitor solution, By Matt Skuegler (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Radeon HD 5830 1GB DDR5 (Personal Computers) I got this video card to run three monitors off the same computer, not for gaming. I have no clue if its good for gaming. But if you're looking for a card to run 3 monitors, read on.Lots of video cards support two monitors, but cards that support three monitors are a lot harder to find. Most people running three monitors seem to use two video cards, but apparently finding the right two cards for my set-up was beyond my abilities/patience. I was close to giving up, but finally broke down and dropped the money for this card. Once I got it installed, running my three monitors was a snap and its running flawlessly. Its substantially quieter than my last video card, but it also runs warmer than I'd like. A couple tips: 1. If I had it all to do over again, I would have just settled for two large monitors instead. Two monitors is cheap and easy, three is expensive and a pain. 2. You can't tell from the photo, but this card is HUGE. Its th e thickness of a 300-400 page book. I have a full size tower computer and it just barely fit (and I had to give up my second hard drive because the card blocked the motherboard connection). If in doubt, be sure you hang onto the packaging until you're sure it will fit. 3. This card is a power hog. If you haven't already upgraded your OEM power supply, you'll almost certainly need to do that before you can run this, because it needs a supply of at least 500 watts. (See #1.) I have a 650W supply and it is working fine. 4. You also will need an adapter to connect the third monitor to the displayport output (unless your monitor has a displayport input, which few do. A relatively inexpensive displayport-to-VGA adapter (like this one: Accell UltraAV B101B-003B Display Port with VGA Active Adapter) works perfec tly, you don't need to spend 100 bucks on a DVI adapter. I have noticed no difference between the monitor running through the VGA adapter vs. the two running from the DVI outputs. 5. This card requires a PCI Express slot. If you don't have one, this isn't the card for you. 6. Using this video card for office applications is swatting flies with a sledgehammer. I have no clue why a more practical (smaller, cheaper, less powerful) option geared toward multi-monitor users is not available. Bottom line: now that its all installed, it works flawlessly for me. If it weren't so expensive, maybe I'd give it 5 stars. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful ATI Graphic cruncher, By Craig Monteith (Black River, St. Elizabeth Jamaica) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Radeon HD 5830 1GB DDR5 (Personal Computers) Looking to eat up some graphics? This card can devour whatever u can through at it. Upgraded from my downed BLACK EDITION 9800 XFX GTX and the fluid difference is noticeable COD Modern Ware fare is even prettier. I noticed a slighter higher heat output as compared to the 9800.But it still runs great. A grerat choice. |
